Materials P245GH, A234 WPB, A105N and P235TR2 in industrial piping systems

When technically ordering steel components for piping systems, codes such as P245GH, A234 WPB, A105N and P235TR2. These designations not only represent the type of steel, but also specify the standard, mechanical properties, method of manufacture and suitability for certain operating conditions. If a company offers both fittings (elbows, reducers, T-pieces) and flanges, an understanding of these markings is essential for correct technical specification and safe use.
P245GH is steel without the addition of alloying elements, defined according to the European standard EN 10222-2. It is used for pressure vessels, steam pipes, heat exchangers and other components operating at elevated temperatures. The material is suitable for operating temperatures up to approximately 400 °C and for a nominal pressure of up to PN 160, depending on the wall thickness and construction. Good weldability and stable mechanical properties make it a reliable choice for forged flanges, rings and covers. It is supplied in a normalised condition, which means heat treatment to improve the internal structure. EN flange dimensions are expressed in millimetres.
A234 WPB is a steel without added alloying elements, which follows the American standard ASTM. It is designed for the manufacture of welded fittings such as elbows, reducers and T-pieces used in industrial piping. The material is suitable for operating temperatures up to 425 °C and for a nominal pressure of up to PN 100, in accordance with the class Class 600. The metalwork of this standard is usually expressed in and from - e.g. 3″ knee, 4″ × 2″ reduction, 6″ T-piece. Due to its good formability and weldability, it is used in systems where liquids or gases are conveyed under medium pressure. Heat treatment, such as normalisation or strain annealing, ensures a homogeneous structure and adequate mechanical properties.
A105N is a steel without added alloying elements, defined according to the American Standard ASTM A105. It is used for forged flanges and other pipe components that need to withstand reliable loads under industrial conditions. The material is suitable for operating temperatures from -29 °C to +454 °C. Within the company's stock Slobrides d.o.o. is A105N available up to nominal pressure PN 100, corresponding to the class Class 600. ASME flange dimensions are expressed in and from - e.g. 2″, 4″, 6″ flange, depending on the pipe diameter. The actual allowable load depends on the dimensions, construction and temperature, in accordance with ASME tables. Code "N" means that the material is normalised, which improves its toughness and structural uniformity. It is suitable for use in power generation, industrial pipelines, heat systems and petrochemical plants.
P235TR2 is steel without the addition of alloying elements, defined according to the European standard EN 10217-1. It is dedicated to the manufacture of pressure pipes and piping systems for the transport of liquids and gases. The material is suitable for operating temperatures up to 300 °C and for a nominal pressure of up to PN 63, depending on the pipe diameter and wall thickness. The tubes according to this standard are expressed in millimetres, e.g. Ø 60,3 mm, Ø 114,3 mm. Good weldability and stable mechanical properties make it a common choice in industrial and energy applications. It is supplied in a normalised condition, which ensures a uniform structure and predictable material behaviour under load.
Each of these materials has a clearly defined field of application. P245GH and P235TR2 sodita v the European classification for pressure vessels and piping systems, while A234 WPB and A105N Follow American standards for fittings and flanges. The differences between them lie not only in the labels, but also in their chemical composition, mechanical properties, processing and end use.
When ordering steel components, it is therefore essential that the materials are precisely specified in terms of temperature, nominal pressure, dimensions (in millimetres or inches), medium and project requirements. The wrong choice can mean incompatibility, technical problems or even safety risks. The company Slobrides d.o.o. technical advice, checking compliance with standards EN, UNI, DIN and ASTM and the supply of fittings and flanges with full traceability and certificates EN 10204/3.1.
Reliability starts with the right choice of material - and that's where we make sure it doesn't end.
